NEWMARKET OCTOBER MEETING 2004
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SECOND DAY, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15
NEWMARKET AWAITS “THE HIGHEST-CLASS RACEDAY EVER STAGED IN BRITAIN”
“I’m not aware that there has ever been a raceday in Britain with seven Group Races, not to mention one of the season’s top handicaps on a sensational eight-race card,” said Newmarket’s Managing Director, Lisa Hancock this morning about tomorrow’s Champions’ Day card.
“Moreover, all the individual races look on paper to be as strong, if not stronger, than in recent years. Overall, Champions’ Day looks certain to live up to its name in no uncertain terms this year on what must surely be the highest-class raceday ever staged in Britain. If ever there was a time to “Come Racing”, then this is it!”
TICKETS
Advance sales have been very strong as usual this year, but tickets for all enclosures at Newmarket will be available on the day:
Day Members £35
Grandstand & Paddock £20
Family Enclosure £7
All accompanied children aged under 16 admitted FREE to all enclosures. Telephone 01638 675 500 or visit www.newmarketracecourses.co.uk for more information.
CHAMPIONS PAST & PRESENT
SIGN PRINTS AND BOOKS
Frankie Dettori, Kieren Fallon, Lester Piggott and David Elsworth will be among those signing books or prints for the public at Champions’ Day tomorrow. The signings will take place, mainly before racing, close to the Newmarket shop by the Parade Ring.
PREMIERSHIP FOOTBALL
For those not wanting to miss out on the lunchtime, pay-per-view game in the Premiership, Birmingham vs Manchester United, it will be shown on the big screen on the Hyperion Lawn (accessible to all Members Enclosure and Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure racegoers). Kick-off is at 12.45pm.
GROUND REMAINS SOFT
Jockeys came in like drowned rats and Frankie Dettori declared that he had “never been as cold in my life”, but the horses went through the rain-lashed ground surprisingly well this afternoon at Newmarket and clerk of the course Michael Prosser has left the official going as
SOFT.
Prosser said: “We will reassess the ground situation in the morning and, while the forecast is better, I am beginning to lose faith with the weather experts.
“Tomorrow the stalls will be positioned on the stands’ side for races of a mile and a quarter or less.
“It has not been a pleasant day, but you just have to get on with it. The racing was extremely competitive, and it was a good day’s racing.”
FIRST RESERVE COMES INTO TOTESPORT CESAREWITCH
The withdrawal this morning of no 11 Numitas from tomorrow’s totesport Cesarewitch because of the soft ground means that the first reserve Nakwa now becomes a runner in the £130,000 handicap.
The other known non-runners for tomorrow are
1.05pm Cornwallis Stakes no 12 Key Secret (ground)
4pm Darley Dewhurst Stakes no 1 Democratic Deficit (vet’s certificate)
5.10pm Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London Darley Stakes no 16 Ecomium (ground)
Punters out to win big on Champion's Day!
Champion's Day at Newmarket brings with it not only high-quality races but also the chance for players to win big in the totescoop6.
For the second week in succession, the bet was lost by the final leg meaning that a massive £295,090 is currently in the win fund.
With the bonus fund even bigger and standing at £395,495, a single winner is in line to win a possible £850,000.
Races this week are divided between Newmarket and Catterick. The standard of racing at Newmarket will mean that punters will have to be on the top of their game especially when one of the races is the 36-horse totesport Cesarewitch.
However, punters will take comfort in the fact that the favourite has a decent win ratio in the race - 17% - which should make it easier to call than the first leg of the Autumn Double, the totesport Cambridgeshire.
Tote Direct staff will also be hoping for a winner as, to coincide with the totesport sponsored autumn double, the shop staff incentive will be doubled to £10,000.
Five of the races will be shown live on Channel 4, whilst a recording of the 3.00 will be shown in sequence meaning that viewers can still keep track of their selections.

PREVIEW OF TOMORROW’S EMIRATES AIRLINE CHAMPION STAKES
John Oxx, who has always been more of a pessimist than an optimist, concedes that the rain has put a dampener on the chances of Azamour becoming the first Irish-trained winner of the Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes since Cairn Rouge 24 years ago.
Oxx, whose father, also John, trained the first Irish winner - Arctic Storm in 1962 - admits that he is going into unknown territory ground-wise with Azamour, who has excelled on a faster surface during the summer. He started the season off when the fast-finishing third to Haafhd in the UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas here at Newmarket on good going. He was then second in the Irish eequivalent of the classic.
Azamour, successful in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, looked as if he relished the step up to 10 furlongs when he came from last to first to beat Norse Dancer by half a length in the Group One Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown last month.
However, whether Azamour will be as effective on this soft ground is debatable - “we certainly could have done without the rain, but I don’t know how he will cope with soft going as he has never run on it,” said Oxx - and the Aga Khan’s colt is actually 2lb worse off with Norse Dancer, who never ran his race when finishing well in the ruck behind Rakti in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot next time out.
Doyen also ran well below par in the Leopardstown contest, but he has never worked particularly well going left-handed and the Godolphin star, thought by many to be happier going the other way round, is better judged on his majestic performance in winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot in July.
Simon Crisford, racing manager to Godolphin which is looking for a first success in this prestigious race, is not overly concerned about the trip - “Doyen has plenty of speed and it won’t be a problem” - and, though the colts’s best form has been shown on fast ground, he is a son of Sadler’s Wells, whose progeny have generally shown a liking for soft going.
Refuse To Bend is the Godolphin second-string but he is no forlorn hope and, having won the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown over this trip in July, should enjoy stepping back up in distance, having been done for toe when third behind Rakti in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.
Aidan O’Brien is also looking for his first win in the Group One feature but his sole representative, Mikado, will need to improve plenty on his comeback third in Listed company at Newmarket a fortnight ago.
Rodrigo de Triano (1992) was the last 2000 Guineas winner to triumph, but Barry Hills has been growing in confidence about the well-being of Haafhd, who looked such an exciting prospect when landing the UltimateBet.com-sponsored classic here in May but has since failed to fire, either at home or on the racecourse.
Yorkshire have waited 51 years - since Charlie Elsey’s Nearula in 1953 - to win this race, but they have two strong contenders in the Mark Johnston pair, Lucky Story and Mister Monet.
Lucky Story, one of last season’s top juveniles, ran a cracker to chase home Rakti at Ascot, while Mister Monet, who has graduated from handicaps, has just got better and better as the season has progressed.
The 11-strong field is completed by Chorist, who was re-routed here, having been unable to fly to Paris for the Arc meeting after banging her head when being loaded on to the plane, the enigmatic Salselon and Naheef, who is adopting the pacemaking role for Godolphin.
EMIRATES AIRLINE CHAMPION STAKES
In last year’s Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, RAKTI was highly impressive beating CARNIVAL DANCER by two lengths with RUSSIAN RHYTHM and ALAMSHAR back in fifth and sixth respectively. Michael Jarvis’s winner had won the 2002 Italian Derby (G1) when trained by Bruno Grizzetti before winning the Premio Presidente della Repubblica (G1) on his first start for the Newmarket handler. This season Rakti has added further Group One successes in the form of the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last month.
In the 2002 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, STORMING HOME defeated MOON BALLAD. Storming Home was subsequently transferred to the yard of Neil Drysdale where he went on to be one of the leading turf horses in North America in 2003 with victories in the Charles Whittingham Handicap (G1) at Hollywood Park and the Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship (G1) at Santa Anita. He was also first past the post in the Arlington Million (G1) and captured the $400,000 Jim Murray Handicap at Santa Anita. He was last seen in action when seventh in the G1 John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita. Moon Ballad was later successful in the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup (G1), at Nad Al Sheba the following March and was retired in 2003 to take up stud duties in Japan.
In 2001 NAYEF underlined his class by winning his first Group 1 race which he added to in 2002 with victories in the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) at Nad Al Sheba and the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) at York while last season he landed the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot. He attempted to win a second Emirates Airline Champion Stakes last year but could only finish eighth behind Rakti.
In the 2000 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, two of the world’s middle distance superstars, KALANISI and MONTJEU, fought out the finish. Three weeks later, KALANISI beat America’s best turf horses in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1).
Sir Mark Prescott’s filly ALBORADA recorded back-to-back victories in 1998 and 1999. Her first triumph saw World Series Champion DAYLAMI take third place while she was a length and a quarter too strong for SHIVA in 1999.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained PILSUDSKI was the victorious horse in 1997. He had earlier won both the Coral Eclipse (G1) and Irish Champion Stakes (G1) that season and followed up on his Newmarket success by taking the Japan Cup (G1) on the final start of his career.

EMIRATES AIRLINE CHAMPION STAKES FACTS
● The inaugural Emirates Airline Champion Stakes took place in 1877 and was won by Springfield.
● The Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, which is for three-year-olds and upwards, is run over a distance of one mile and two furlongs and was sponsored for the first time in 2002 by Emirates Airline, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates connection is not new however as the ruling Maktoum family of Dubai have generously supported the contest since 1982.
● The only horse to have been successful three times was Tristan in 1882, 1883 and 1884, while there have been 10 dual winners. The Sir Mark Prescott-trained Alborada is the latest of them, taking the 1998 and 1999 renewals. The other dual winners are Triptych (1986, 1987), Brigadier Gerard (1971, 1972), Dynamiter (1951, 1952), Hippius (1940, 1941), Wychwood Abbot (1935, 1936), Fairway (1928, 1929), Orpheus (1920, 1921), Lemberg (1910, 1911) and Velasquez (1897, 1898). This year Rakti could bid to win the race for a second time, having previously been successful in last year’s renewal.
● The longest-priced post-war winner was Hurry Harriet at 33/1 in 1973.
● Backers did not receive much of a return for their money when Ormonde came in at 1/100 in 1886, making him the shortest-priced winner. Since 1945 the shortest-priced scorer was Petite Etoile at 2/11 in 1959.
● The two most successful trainers since 1945 have been Sir Noel Murless and Patrick Biancone with three victories apiece. The former’s wins came with Hugh Lupus in 1956, Petite Etoile three years later and Lorenzaccio in 1970, while Biancone, who was then based in France and is now in America, scored with Palace Music in 1984 and Triptych twice in 1986 and 1987.
● Current trainers with two victories each are Henry Cecil (Indian Skimmer 1988 and Bosra Sham 1996), Andre Fabre (Tel Quel 1991 and Dernier Empereur 1994), Sir Mark Prescott (Alborada 1998 and 1999), Sir Michael Stoute (Pilsudski 1997 and Kalanisi 2000) and Barry Hills (1983 Cormorant Wood and Storming Home 2002).
● Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey since 1945, winning on five occasions, with his last victory coming on Rodrigo De Triano in 1992. His other four successes came on Petite Etoile (1959), Pieces Of Eight (1966), Sir Ivor (1968) and Giacometti (1974). The most successful current jockey is George Duffield, victorious on the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Alborada in 1998 and 1999. Duffield will not be in action in this year’s contest due to a damaged shoulder.
● Fillies and mares have an extremely good record in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes - with 22 of the 59 runnings since 1945 captured by members of the fairer sex. The winning run started in 1957 and since 1980 mares and fillies have won a dozen times.
● Three-year-olds have fared much the best since 1945. Horses of classic age have taken 40 renewals as opposed to 15 winning four-year-olds and four successful five-year-olds. No horse older than five has won during this time.
● The largest fields since 1945 were in 1976 and 1983 when 19 contestants went to post. Last year there were 12 starters. Only three horses took part in 1959 - the smallest number since 1945.
● Five Irish-trained horses have tasted success since 1945. The first was Arctic Storm, trained by John Oxx snr, in 1962. The other four winners from the Emerald Isle were Pieces Of Eight (Vincent O’Brien 1966), Sir Ivor (Vincent O’Brien 1968), Hurry Harriet (Paddy Mullins 1973) and Cairn Rouge (Michael Cunningham 1980).
● French-trained horses have seen off the opposition on 19 occasions since 1945. The most recent French-trained winner was Andre Fabre’s Dernier Empereur in 1994. Marguerite Vernaut was the sole success for Italy in 1960.
● In 1933 the judge called a dead-heat between Dastur and Chatelaine.
PREVIEW OF DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES
Tomorrow’s Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes promises to be The two-year-old race of the season with some of the very best youngsters putting their credentials on the line. The winner will be very high in the ante-post lists for next year’s classics.
Two already in that exalted position are Etlaala and Shamardal, who are both unbeaten in two starts and have earned many admirers in the process.
Etlaala followed his debut success in a maiden race at Newbury by moving smartly up in grade to take the Group Two SGB Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, overcoming difficulties in running to beat Iceman by half a length.
Iceman, who has since run a good third in the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes at the last meeting here, is now 5lb better off with his Town Moor conqueror so it should be even closer between them
Shamardal, who will now be running for the Gainsborough Stud instead of his previous owner, was very impressive when beating Wilko by two and a half lengths in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. This followed an eight-length success first time out at Ayr.
Iceman was running for the first time since June when he turned in what his trainer John Gosden regards as an ideal Dewhurst trial in the Middle Park, and from the way he was finishing he will certainly appreciate the return to seven furlongs.
There is one runner from Ireland (Democratic Delight is a non-runner) Oratorio, who is with Aidan O’Brien, trainer of the Middle Park winner Ad Valorem. Oratio and Montgomery’s Arch ran last time in the Group One Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on Arc day, when Oratorio took advantage of a gap which appeared by the far rails to get up close home and pip Early March and Layman. Montgomery’s Arch was two and and half lengths back in fourth.
Another who won in France last time is Tremar, who has been supplemented for the Dewhurst at a cost of £15,000. He has more to do now in Group One company but is clearly on the upgrade.
There are two runners for Godolphin with Frankie Dettori preferring theGroup Two nHackney Empire Royal Lodge Stakes winner Perfect Performance to Librettist, even though the latter is another who has won both his races, most recently at Doncaster.
Home Affairs followed his promising debut by winning in similar company at Yarmouth over this trip by three lengths from Notability, who has boosted the form by winning since, and Henrik, who completes the top class line-up, was runner-up to Dubawi (subsequently winner of the National Stakes in Ireland) in the Weatherbys Superlative Stakes on the July course at Newmarket..
DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS
In last year’s Darley Dewhurst Stakes MILK IT MICK got the better of THREE VALLEYS by a head in a marvellous finish with HAAFHD and BACHELOR DUKE in third and fourth respectively. Haafhd returned to Newmarket in May to capture this season’s UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas, while Bachelor Duke was successful in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh three weeks later.
The 2002 Darley Dewhurst Stakes went to TOUT SEUL, who defeated TOMAHAWK and TRADE FAIR. Tout Seul finished fourth in the 2000 Guineas in 2003 while Trade Fair was successful three times in 2003, including the Betfair Criterion Stakes (G3) at Newmarket in June, and he also won the Emirates Airline Minstrel Stakes (G3) at the Curragh this season.
In the 2001 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR beat LANDSEER with WHERE OR WHEN a close fourth. At the time it was considered by some to be a sub-standard Dewhurst. The feats of this trio the following season proved otherwise! ROCK OF GIBRALTAR won both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas and ended his career with seven Group One victories; LANDSEER won the French 2,000 Guineas (G1) and the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile (G1); WHERE OR WHEN proved his class with a scintillating victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1) at Ascot. In all, they registered eight Group One victories between them in 2002.
In the 2000 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, TOBOUGG stamped himself Britain’s top two-year-old colt, beating NOVERRE, who went on to win the 2001 French 2000 Guineas (G1) (before subsequent disqualification) and the Sussex Stakes (G1), with MOZART, crowned Europe’s champion sprinter in 2001, back in fourth.

DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES FACTS
● The Dewhurst Stakes was first run in 1875 when Kisber was successful.
● The Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes, for two-year-old colts and fillies, is run over seven furlongs. Although fillies can run, they rarely do so nowadays and the last to win was Torbella III in 1957.
● Two dead-heats have occurred. The first happened in 1910 when the judge was unable to separate King William and Phryxus. More recently there was nothing to choose between Prince Of Dance and Scenic in 1988.
● Those racegoers who backed Generous in 1990 could afford to live up to his name as he was returned at 50/1 - the longest-priced winner. Milk It Mick came close in 2003 returned at 33/1. The shortest-priced winner was Orme at 6/100 in 1891, while the shortest-priced scorer since 1945 was the great Nijinsky at 1/3 in 1969.
● The largest field since 1945 was 16 in 2002, bettering the previous highest of 13 which faced the starter in 1966. Mill Reef scared off the opposition in 1970 when only two others went to post, making it the smallest field in the same time period.
● Possibly the greatest trainer of all time, Vincent O’Brien, is the most successful in the Dewhurst Stakes since 1945 with seven victories. Nijinsky posted the first O’Brien success in 1969, followed by Cellini four seasons later, The Minstrel in 1976, Try My Best 1977, Monteverdi 1979, Storm Bird 1980 and, lastly, El Gran Senor in 1983.
● Two current trainers have the best records with three successes. French handler Andre Fabre has Zafonic (1992), Pennekamp (1994) and Xaar (1997) to thank, while Lambourn-based Barry Hills first succeeded in 1988 with Scenic and he followed up with In Command in 1996 and Distant Music in 1999.
● Of the jockeys, Lester Piggott has the best record since 1945 in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes winning an incredible 10 times - with Crepello (1956), Follow Suit (1962), Ribofilio (1968), Nijinsky (1969), Crowned Prince (1971), Cellini (1973), The Minstrel (1976), Try My Best (1977), Monteverdi (1979) and Diesis (1982).
● Pat Eddery, who retired at the end of last season, trails Piggott’s tally by four having got off the mark in 1972 on Lunchtime. He followed up on Grundy (1974), Storm Bird (1980), El Gran Senor (1983), Zafonic (1992) and Grand Lodge (1993). On his last ride in the race he finished seventh on Balmont.
● Michael Hills is the leading current rider. His four victories came courtesy of Huntingdale (1985), Scenic (1988), In Command (1996) and Distant Music (1999).
● Since 1945, Irish-trained horses have the edge on their French counterparts by two victories, having gained eight successes as opposed to six. Seven of the eight Irish-trained winners were handled by Vincent O’Brien, while his successor at Ballydoyle, Aidan O’Brien, was responsible for 2001 winner Rock Of Gibraltar. The latter went on to record seven consecutive Group One victories, beating Mill Reef’s previous best of six.
● The sextet of French-trained successes are Emperor II (1949), Marsyad (1951), Torbella III (1957), Zafonic (1992), Pennekamp (1994) and Xaar (1997), the last three of whom were all trained by Andre Fabre.
● The Darley Dewhurst Stakes is a well-known classic trial, with winners like Rock Of Gibraltar, Pennekamp, Zafonic, El Gran Senor and Wollow going on to score in the 2000 Guineas and Dr Devious, Generous, The Minstrel, Grundy, Mill Reef and Nijinsky (who also won the 2000 Guineas and St Leger) taking the Derby.
A CLIFF HANGER FOR THE BUBBLES
The results of tomorrow’s Champions’ Day card will decide which trainer wins the Ruinart Challenge and is rewarded by being presented with his weight in champagne.
The competition revolves round the Group races at Newmarket through the season with 10 points being awarded to the trainer who sends out a Group One winner, six for a Group Two and three for a Group Three.
At the moment Mark Johnston, who has won two Group One races with Attraction and has three runners at that level tomorrow, heads the table with 29 points, three more than James Fanshawe, who had his splendid July meeting double with Frizzante and Soviet Song.
There is then a 10-point gap to Barry Hills, but he could yet have a say in the destiny of the bottles as he has fancied runners in both tomorrow’s Group One races.
Aidan O’Brien and Brian Meehan, who won the big two-year-old races at the last meeting, are the only other trainers in double figures.
Race One: Federation of Bloodstock Agents Maiden Stakes

PROCLAMATION SURPRISES NOSEDA
The money was down for newcomer Proclamation in the opening Federation of Bloodstock Agents Maiden Stakes (20-1 to 12-1), though winning trainer Jeremy Noseda confessed he was taken aback at the grey’s success.
Proclamation, a King’s Best half-brother to No Refuge, who carries topweight in tomorrow’s totesport Cesarewitch, was always travelling best in the testing ground, and he pulled clear coming out of the Dip to win by three and a half lengths.
Noseda said: “That was a surprise. I thought he was a nice handicapper for next year, but that has scuppered that idea.
“He went in the ground and nothing picked up from behind, and it was a very pleasing start. That will be it for the season.”
Proclamation, who cost 84,000gns as a yearling, also surprised jockey Eddie Ahern, who said: “I knew nothing about him, but he could not have done it any better.”

SOFT GROUND
The jockeys who rode in the first race had no doubt that the ground is soft, and some felt that there it was even easier than that.
“It is alright until you get into the Dip and there it is very heavy; I haven’t ridden on worse ground at Newmarket,” said Richard Hughes.
Richard Quinn said that the going is “soft, but they are going through it,” and Frankie Dettori called it “very soft”.
Kevin Darley and Philip Robinson felt that it was “heavy”, but winning jockey Eddie Ahern agreed with the official description of “soft.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
PRESTIGE NURSERY
INGLETON HAS SALES DATE
Ingleton, carrying a 7lb penalty for his win at York a week ago, was backed down to 15-8 favouritism for the Prestige Nursery and duly justified the support.
But he had to work hard to get the better of long time leader Our Fugitive and it was only well inside the final furlong that Graham Gibbons forced the winner’s head in front.
“He certainly had to work harder than last time, but he battled on well. He has big feet, but that doesn’t mean that he wants soft ground,” said the winner’s trainer Bryan McMahon after talking on his mobile to the winner’s owner John Fretwell.
“John is having a few days break in Jersey and when he got there the first thing he asked at the hotel was ‘where’s the betting shop ?’. Apparently it is only about ten minutes away from where he is staying.
“This is a fine big horse and when he won last time a leading jumping trainer said that he would not look out of place in a two mile novice chase -- and he was being complimentary.
“He is in the horses in training sale at Doncaster next week and if he makes enough money he will be sold,” McMahon added.”
Race Two: Prestige Nursery
Quotes
HOLLAND ENTHUSES ABOUT FUGITIVE
Darryll Holland, though beaten a neck on Our Fugitive in the Prestige Nursery, is adamant that the best is yet to come from Tony Carroll’s grey.
Holland said: “The first time I sat on this horse, I was convinced he was not going to be at his best until next year, and I still stick by that.
“He is still weak but, with a winter behind him, he’ll have that much more strength, and he’ll be a useful sprinter.
“I don’t subscribe to the fact that the sixth furlong beat him - he is just a bit too immature right now.”
Tony Carroll, who had originally planned to run Our Fugitive in the Group Three Cornwallis Stakes at Salisbury last Saturday (re-routed to Newmarket tomorrow), said: “I knew he would not mind soft ground and had my eyes on Salisbury, but when that was abandoned, rather than re-enter him for the big one here, I decided to aim for the nursery.
“We’ll put him away now and, while I disagree with Darryll in that I think the trip did beat him, he will be stronger next year.”
Race Three: Heathavon Stud Houghton Stakes
Winner’s Quotes
ELSWORTH WAXING LYRICAL
David Elsworth stopped short of mentioning the Vodafone Oaks, but he left no doubt as to the high opinion that he has of Something Exciting after his improving filly had bolted in by three lengths in the Heathavon Stud Houghton Stakes.
When Richard Quinn gave Something Exciting the office, she swept past Emboss to win impressively, leaving the in-form Elsworth on a high.
He said: “Something Exciting is a high-class filly - I love her to bits and she is by a great stallion in Halling.
“I can only presume that everyone else was in the bar when I bought her, because I got her for only 21,000 guineas.
“She needed to improve to win this, but I knew that she had improved plenty. It is not what is in the formbook that counts - it is what they are doing now, and she is a very progressive filly.
“When Quinny picked her up, she put daylight between herself and the rest in no time, and she was dossing from the furlong-pole. She comes from a great family and, while she is not short of speed, she will stay well next year. We’ll put her away now and start dreaming.”
Richard Hannon, who trained runner-up Embossed, said: “Just as we came to win the race, Something Exciting has come sweeping past all of us. That Elsworth is on a real roll, and I shall have to try and stop him somehow, Maybe, I’ll shoot him!”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
IGLOOS BENTINCK STAKES
CHANNON HOPES FOR HONG KONG INVITATION
“I would like to have the option of taking him for the Group 1 Hong Kong sprint in December,” said Mick Channon after Royal Millennium had just held the renewed effort of Moss Vale in the Igloos Bentinck Stakes.
“I am not saying that he is bound to run in that, but it would be nice to have the chance. I would think that after his third in the Abbaye he would have got a high enough rating to earn an invitation.
“He is a very good horse, one of the best I have had, but he has always had the habit of stopping when he hits the front. He did it again there; he must have been a neck in front 100 yards out but the runner-up was coming back again at him at the line.”
Channon paid tribute to Ted Durcan who rode the winner and, with the second, was one of four jockeys who came over towards the stands side. “Ted had done his homework and we decided that Moss Vale was the horse to follow, so when he came over this way he decided to follow the same route.
“I wish it had been soft at Longchamp. This fellow can go in anything, but soft ground is not so good for some of the others. He will stay in training next year - as he is a gelding there is not a lot else he can do - and maybe he will be able to improve again !”
Barry Hills, who trains the runner-up, said “That was a cracking run for a three-year-old as they are just not strong enough to beat the older horses in this ground. He would have stuffed the winner over five furlongs and we will put him away now and bring him back next year when he’ll be a smashing prospect for the big sprints.”
Race Five: Bellwinch Homes Handicap
Winner’s Quotes.
STREAM OF GOLD SAILS HOME
Stream of Gold, relishing the testing conditions, ran out an impressive three and a half lengths winner of the Bellwinch Homes Handicap, in which the field finished strung out.
Sir Michael Stoute, who trains Stream of Gold, said: “The conditions played an important part - our fellow went so well through the ground, whereas others were floundering.”
Stream of Gold had only 8st 3lb, so Frannie Norton deputised for stable jockey Kieren Fallon and he was mightily impressed.
He said: ”Being by Rainbow Quest, he was always going to love that ground and he has absolutely hacked up. Now I know why Fallon is champion, when he has the pick of good horses like that.”
Placed quotes
“He has run very well and, of course, like all the family he loves this ground,” said Jonathan Geake, assistant and son-law of the soon-to-retire Toby Balding after King’s Caprice had finished second.
“Steve (Carson) says that he likes to be in charge and the jockey certainly gave him a very positive ride. He won’t go hurdling, because he is too keen and he would not get the trip, but Miss (Bridget) Swire’s Ebor runner-up Gold Ring will go jumping, though his owner wants to him to have one run to see how he gets on - so he may have to go straight to Cheltenham!”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
SPORTING INDEX PREMIER CLAIMING STAKES
ALWAYS WAINING VERY APPROPRIATE
In view of the miserable weather racegoers had to endure during the afternoon, Always Waining was a very appropriately-named winner of the Sporting Index claimer, which he won easing down by four lengths from the 50-1 shot Harrycat.
“We ran him in this because we wanted to show that he was fit and well before he goes to the sales in a couple of weeks,” said the winner’s trainer Mark Johnston. “But I shall be surprised if we get him back as I expect that someone will claim him.
“There should be more of these races at this time of year, it is a good way to sell horses and there ought to be two a day all the time in the autumn.”
Looking ahead to tomorrow when he has major big race hopes for Mister Monet and Lucky Story in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes and Shamardal in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes, Johnston said: “amazingly for me, I am not worried about the ground being soft, though if it gets worse than that the only one of my three who has run and won on ground as heavy as it might be is Mister Monet.
“Shamardal did a very good bit of work the other day with Joseph Henry, who could not get near him and then went on to run very well and is to run in the Cornwallis tomorrow.
“I am very much looking forward to the day.”
Race Seven: George Winsor Lifetime In Racing Handicap
Winner’s Quotes:
LINCOLN BECKONS FOR KAMANDA LAUGH
Barry Hills know what it takes to win the Lincoln, and he has next March’s big Doncaster cavalry charge in mind for Kamanda Laugh, who made it four wins from five races this season when beating Boule d’Or by a neck in the George Winsor Lifetime In Racing Handicap.
“Barry told me nine months ago that Kamanda Laugh could be his Lincoln horse for 2005, and I hope he is right,” said part-owner John Sillett, who managed Coventry City to win the FA Cup in 1987.
“I cannot thank Barry enough,” Sillett added. “He has done so well with this horse and the only time he was beaten was when he was short-headed by Apex when we tried to win the Coventry Cup at Warwick. That was the second final I’ve been in, but fortunately I won the other!”
Hills said: “Kamanda Laugh is a good fun horse, and he tries his heart out. Martin (Dwyer) got off and told me that he was ‘tough and determined’ and that sums him up. Now we will have to train him for the Lincoln which, as you all know, is a race which brings back fond memories.”
Asked how he thought the testing ground would affect Haafhd, his UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas winner, who runs in tomorrow’s Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes, Hills replied: “Who knows, but the ground is not as bad as it looks. They are only taking the top of it off, and that is why they have trained racehorses here for hundreds of years. It takes the rain better than most.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE SEVEN
GEORGE WINSOR LIFETIME IN RACING HANDICAP
WINTER DERBY PLANS FOR BOULE
“He is so consistent and just never runs a bad race,” said Roger Ingram after his Boule d’Or had been beaten a neck by Kamanda Laugh in the George Winsor Lifetime in Racing Handicap.
“One hundred yards out we were in front but the other horse has just come back to beat us with the advantage of the rails.
“The draw here can be a devil. Last time he ran here he was drawn low and the horses won on the far side, and this time he was drawn high and the winner was low and raced against the stands’rails.
“Last year we gave him a four months break after the flat turf season and he did himself so well that it took ages to get him fit. It’s good that he does eat up well as it gives you something to work on, but it did take a long time.
“So this year we are going to run him on the all weather at Lingfield, where the prize money is now very good. There are races there worth £25,000 and we hope he can do well enough to run in the Winter Derby which now has £100,000 guaranteed.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE EIGHT
NEWMARKET CHALLENGE WHIP
ULTIMATA LEADS ALL THE WAY
The old outsider of three theory came up trumps in the Newmarket Challenge Whip in which 11-4 Ultimata led all the way in the hands of Frankie Dettori to win by a length and a quarter from Vamp. Hot favourite Impersonator was last of the three.
It was a very appropriate result, too, as the long established trophy was won by the senior steward of the Jockey Club, Julian Richmond-Watson, and he received the trophy from the incoming Newmarket chairman Richard Hambro.
“The trainer (James Fanshawe) did not want to run the filly and I had to talk him into it,” said Richmond-Watson, who pointed out to David Oldrey, owner of runner-up Vamp, that there was no way in which he should win the prize as he had framed the race conditions.
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
Following more rain overnight the going for the second day of the October meeting remains
SOFT.
“Although the forecast suggested that yesterday and today would be predominately dry, they have got it wrong and we have had five millimetres of rain overnight,” said clerk of the course Michael Prosser.
“The forecast is that rain will be with us for most of the day, but the hope is that tomorrow will be mainly dry, though the rain will still be about.”
BETTING NEWS
Paddy Power report an old-fashioned gamble this morning on Chris Wall’s Ace of Hearts for the George Winsor Lifetime In Racing Handicap.
Tony Coleman, representing the Irish firm, said: “The phones have been red hot, and it has been serious money from several of our regulars, whom we consider to be very shrewd.
“We opened at 20-1, but the support has carried through all morning, and, with his good draw (25), it was no surprise to see his odds tumble. He is now a top-priced 12-1.”
Paddy Power have also seen strong support for Moss Vale in the Igloos Bentinck Stakes (2.50pm), and Barry Hills’s sprinter is down to 9-2 from 6-1.
The Moss Vale plunge has been mirrored with Victor Chandler, who were knocked over for their 7-1 offer when the offices opened and have also been forced to cut the odds to 9-2.
Chandlers also report money for Baltic King - selection of Betting Bureau in The Racing Post - in the same race, and Hughie Morrison’s speedster has been clipped to 12-1 from 14-1.
