CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING - THIRD DAY
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
NEWMARKET, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2003
SIR MARK AFTER £100,000 BONUS FOR
NEW TOTE AUTUMN DOUBLE
Sir Mark Prescott is now chasing the new Tote Autumn Double bonus of £100,000 (£70,000 for stable staff and £30,000 for the trainer) awarded if a trainer is successful in both today’s Tote Cambridgeshire and the Tote Cesarewitch on Champions’ Day at Newmarket in two weeks’ time.
The Newmarket-based trainer has four horses lined up for the £125,000 Tote Cesarewitch over two miles two furlongs on October 18 and thinks he has good chances.
The horses are listed below with their latest odds for the Tote Cesarewitch from the sponsors:-
THE TOTE CESAREWITCH
Class B, Showcase Handicap, £125,000 Total Prize Fund. Newmarket, Saturday, October 18, 2003. For three-year-olds & upwards, two miles & about two furlongs.
23-(1)211 INGLIS DREVER 4-9-02 Piers Pottinger Sir Mark Prescott Seb Sanders
10/1 Tote
23-30301 NUMITAS (GER) 3-8-05 (inc5lbx) Cheveley Park Stud Sir Mark Prescott Darryll Holland
16/1 Tote
3(1)1213 NO REFUGE (IRE) 3-8-03 Wally Sturt - Osborne House III Sir Mark Prescott George Duffield
7/1 Tote
1(1)11112 ONE OFF 3-7-10 Lady O'Reilly Sir Mark Prescott Jamie Mackay
16/1 Tote
Sir Mark said: “Unless disaster strikes, we will have four runners. We run Inglis Drever who was favourite, and Seb Sanders rides, No Refuge, who is now favourite, and George (Duffield) rides, One Off, who has had a marvellous season, and Jamie Mackay rides and somebody called Holland (Darryll), who I have not used before, rides Numitas. They tell me he (Holland) is quite good.
“They have all got good chances but they could easily all get beaten. The ground will be a big factor. One Off and Numitas would be better with it on top while Inglis Drever and No Refuge - both of whom there is a doubt about the trip - would prefer ease in the ground.
“We will see - If I was the Tote, I would be worried but something normally rescues them!”
Race Four: Tote Cambridgeshire
Winning Quotes
EMOTIONAL PRESCOTT WINS THIRD CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Sir Mark Prescott had to fight back the tears after Chivalry, having his first race for 11 months, had provided him with his third Cambridgeshire triumph when holding off the whirlwind finish of Adiemus in the Tote-sponsored cavalry charge.
Like Quinlan Terry and Pasternak, who landed a monumental gamble in 1997, Chivalry (14-1) was ridden by Britain’s oldest jockey, 56-year-old George Duffield, and there were emotional scenes in the winner’s enclosure afterwards.
“That was the 800th winner that George has ridden for me,” revealed Prescott, who had worried all week that Chivalry might not get into the race.
Prescott added:”I enjoyed that most of my three Cambridgeshire winners. We have had a very difficult time - he was lame in the spring and when we got him right the ground was too firm so we left him alone.
“I contemplated running him at Haydock to get a penalty so as to ensure that we got a run, but, in the event, it’s a good job I didn’t - the ground was wrong there. He’s only won a short head, and he’d have been beaten with a penalty. That’s how much I know about racing!”
Chivalry runs for the Wally Sturt and Osborne House syndicate, and Prescott said:”Sadly, Graham Rock, who owned Chivalry before he died, is no longer with us, but his widow Joan has a share, and the other five have all had horses with me for at least 17 years.
“My confidence began to waver when the ground dried up so much. I knew that he would go on it once, but he is much better in the soft and his form at home with Albanova and some of our other older horses has been outstanding.”
Prescott was full of praise for the ride of Duffield, who has been with the Heath House trainer for 31 years.
“I can’t seem to get rid of the old boy,” said Prescott. “I presume that the Science Museum will want his body when he finally dies, and when he does pack up I would guess that Seb Sanders would be immediately arrested as the first suspect!
“George is riding as well as ever. He lives in Yorkshire now and hates having to ride down south, so when you see him in action at Lingfield and Brighton you can be sure that he will ride like a dervish.”
Duffield played down his part in the success and said modestly: “it is all down to the horse”.
He added: ”If the ground had been soft he would have won by three or four lengths, but it was a mess of a race and nobody knew where the ground was and we were all looking at each other when the stalls opened.
“Consequently, I was in front sooner than I would have liked, and he pricked his ears, but when the other horse came at him he put his big old head out and found one last surge.
“Mark and I have a great business relationship, and, though we never socialise, it works. I’ll be 57 in November, but I won’t hang up my boots until I have passed Edward Hide’s tally.
“He is the winning-most jockey never to have been champion, and I am about 30-odd short of his 2,593. I am determined to pass that total, and when I do that will be it.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
TOTE CAMBRIDGESHIRE HANDICAP
SO NEARLY ANOTHER BIG PRIZE FOR NOSEDA
Jeremy Noseda continued his remarkable week when Adiemus just failed to wear down Chivalry in the Tote Cambridgeshire. Earlier this afternoon his Peak To Creek had landed the big two-year-old race at Redcar, and on the first two days here he won the Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes with Carry On Katie and almost landed the Shadwell Stud Middle Park with Balmont.
“How can I complain when I have a photograph go against me ?,” he said.
“After all, the camera was on my side at Redcar and this horse has run a fantastic race even though he hasn’t won. Michael (Hills) thought that he would have got up in another stride, but he has run a wonderful race.
“He got very dehydrated on that very hot day when he ran in the John Smith’s Cup at York, and then when I took him to Epsom last time and really fancied him, he just didn’t perform. Maybe he did not like the track, but I don’t really know the reason.
“He has been going very well at home, and all his form in the winter made me certain that the engine was still there; it was just a question of getting him to perform.
“Now that he has done that we can look forward to another successful camapaign on the all weather, and maybe he will get lucky in the Winter Derby this time.”
Tim Corby was delighted with the performance of his Checkit, who finished third. “What a performance for a three-year-old under 9st 6lb, which included his penalty from when he won at Doncaster, though that was a bit nullified by Sam (Hitchcott)’s allowance,” he said.
“I think that if he had had something to race with in the closing stages he would have been even closer to the front two, but they were that bit over towards the other side of the track from him and he rather had to race on his own.
“He had won £164,000 in prize money before today, and only Far Lane of all the others in the race had won more -- and he is a four-year-old.
“He cost only 24,000gns and is as tough as old boots. He was fourth over a trip a bit short for him in Germany last weekend, but there are plenty more races for him. There is a Group 111 race at Dusseldorf next weekend, another one back here at the next meeting and then there is a race in Italy which could end his season.”
NEW FORMAT VOTED BIG HIT
Today’ crowd came to 15,674, 5% up on last year’s attendance of 14,895 on Tote Cesarewitch day.
This means that all three days of the new-look Cambridgeshire Meeting have had bigger crowds than a year ago.
Friday 8,178 up 5%
Thursday 8,532 up 7%
Lisa Hancock, Managing Director at Newmarket, declared the new format of condensing the four days into three for this year’s Tote Cambridgeshire meeting as “a tremendous success”.
Hancock said:”I think our decision to reshape the meeting has been thoroughly vindicated.
“By getting rid of the weaker races, we have produced 21 quality affairs and there has been top-class racing throughout, with some fantastic finishes, none better than the nail-biting Tote Cambridgeshire victory of Chivalry.
“There were record Tote Jackpot and Placepots on Friday, and, despite the fast ground, the fields have held up well.
“All in all, I am absolutely delighted, but I hope we get a drop of rain before our next meeting, which culminates in Champions’ Day on October 18.”

NB The Peugeot Charity Trophy goes to the jockey with the most victories over the three days of the Cambridgeshire Meeting. If one or more jockeys are tied on victories, a points system will be used to determine the winner - Win: 4 points; 2nd: 3 points; 3rd: 2 points; 4th: 1 point. Michael Hills and Jamie Spencer each had four wins and then also tied under the points system. Michael Hills was adjudged the winner as he gained a second. He won the use of a Peugeot for his favourite charity for six months and he nominated the Injured Jockeys Fund as the beneficiary.
WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
EBF JERSEY LILY FILLIES’ NURSERY
HAT TRICK FOR SNOW GOOSE
Snow Goose, owned and bred by former Senior Steward of the Jockey Club Sir Thomas Pilkington, made just about all the running to take the EBF Jersey Lily Nursery by a length from Why Dubai, who chased her through most of the last two furlongs.
“Pat (Eddery) said that she kept changing her legs in the closing stages and she wasn’t really that happy on the ground, but neither John (Dunlop) nor I felt that the ground would be a problem for her,” said Sir Thomas.
“Her dam Bronzewing was a very good racemare for me. She won three good handicaps, the Esher Cup as well as races at the July meeting and Ascot, and then I got a bit ambitious and sent her to America where she was trained by one John Gosden.
“She did not win in the States, though she was placed, and she has been a wonderful broodmare. I was looking through the Horses in Training sales catalogue the other day -- I am selling the three-year-old out of her -- and I realised that almost all her offspring have won. She is 18 or 19 now and still going strong.”
John Dunlop thought that Snow Goose “won a bit tidily,” but was not able to commit himself as to whether the filly would be out again this season.

Placed Quotes:
NO DIP AND WE WIN
CLAIMS HUGHES
Richard Hughes, who rode runner-up Why Dubai, felt he would have won the opener had his filly come down the hill.
Hughes said:”The Dip has beaten us. I lost Why Dubai for 100 yards coming down the steepest part of the hill, and when we met the rising ground she picked up again.”
Richard Hannon, who trains Why Dubai for UAE businessman Malih Al Basti - “she is by Kris S and we originally requested the name Kris Miss but were turned down” - was delighted with his filly.
He said:”We’ll be looking for Listed races next season. I thought for a second that she was going to nail the leader, but several of ours have scoped badly this week, so it is a relief that she has run so well.”
David Loder, who trained third-placed Varnav, thought his filly ran well with her big weight. “She was badly placed on the far rails, and, though she made up a lot of ground, the first two were beyond recall,” said the Newmarket trainer.
Pat Smullen, having ridden in the opener, described the ground as “quick but safe”, Sam Hitchcott called it “fast”, while George Duffield praised the groundstaff, commenting “it is quick, but there is a good cover of grass.”
Race Two - Finnforest Oh So Sharp Stakes (Listed)
Winning Quotes
FALLON’S LOSS IS SPENCER’S GAIN
Kieren Fallon, sitting out Tote Cambridgeshire day because of a one-day suspension, won’t have enjoyed armchair viewing of the Listed Oh So Sharp Stakes as Jamie Spencer successfully deputised on the brave Top Romance.
Spencer rode a lovely waiting race from the front, making all and keeping enough up his sleeve to hold the persistent challenge of Spotlight by a neck, with Scottish raider Kelucia finishing with a flourish to snatch third.
Sir Michael Stoute, celebrating his first winner of the new-look three-day Cambridgeshire meeting, said:”That was a very game performance - Jamie reported that he got a bit unbalanced on the fast ground in the Dip but that when he met the rise he ran on again.
“I am particularly thrilled for Mrs Denis Haynes. She is one of my longest-serving owners, and this was her very first entry in a two-year-old Listed race, let alone winner.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
FINNFOREST OH SO SHARP STAKES
A BETTER PACE WOULD HAVE HELPED
Jim Goldie was delighted with the display by Kelucia, who finished third at 20-1 in the Finnforest Oh So Sharp Stakes, beaten just over a length by the successful Top Romance.
“I think she could have done with a better pace, but maybe in this wind no-one wanted to go too fast and it became a bit of a tactical race,” he said.
“But she was running on really well and with another half furlong to go she would have been right there.
“I was not at all surprised that she ran so well, even though she was a 20-1 shot as she had won very well against colts at Ayr last time.
“I don’t know if she will run again this year and that may depend on the ground. I don’t think that she would like soft ground, but then soft ground looks as if it is a thing of the past.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
PEUGEOT SUN CHARIOT STAKES
SPENCER DOUBLES UP
Jamie Spencer added to his Top Romance gains when Echoes In Eternity held off the persistent challenge of Macadamia to take the Peugeot Sun Chariot Stakes by a neck, completing a 69-1 double for her jockey.
“We had a difficult time with her in the summer as she injured her off side hock badly when she slipped coming out of the stalls in the Musidora,” said Godolphin’s Simon Crisford.
“We pin fired the hock and gave her time to get over things, and she has been running and winning like a progressive filly since she came back.
“We bought her this time a year ago, obviously thinking that she was a filly with a future, and as she has had only a light season I think there is every chance that she will stay in training next year.
“If she does so races like the Beverly D (at Arlington Park, USA) will be the sort of race we will aim at for her, and I doubt if she will race again this year. There isn’t anything for her.”
Race Three: Peugeot Sun Chariot Stakes (Group 2)

FANSHAWE PLEADS FOR REPRIEVE
James Fanshawe plans to use all his persuasive powers this winter in an attempt to convince owner-breeder Lord Vestey to wait another season before covering Macadamia, who failed by only a neck to reel in Echoes In Eternity in the Group 2 Peugeot Sun Chariot Stakes.
Fanshawe said:”Macadamia is a star, and I knew that her Nassau Stakes form was wrong. It was not the trip - but, though she would never have beaten Russian Rhythm, she just ran very flat.
“She has bounced back well and I will do all I can to persuade Sam Vestey to let me have her for one more season on the track.”
Sebastian Maillot, brother-in-law of Thierry Thulliez, was thrilled with his first ride at Newmarket on French challenger Almond Mousse, who ran a stormer to finish third.
Owner Serge Vallin said:”We walked the track at lunchtime and were very pleased with the going - you might call it fast, but in France we would be calling this ‘good to soft’.
“Sebastian gave Almond Mousse a terrific ride, and our only surprise was the filly’s starting price of 33-1. She was only two lengths off Bright Sky in France and is very good and now we will take her to California for the 300,000 dollar Matriarch at Hollywood Park on November 30.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
KENNETT HANDICAP
TUSK STICKS HIS NOSE OUT
The team of Mick Channon and his apprentice Sam Hitchcott, who went so close with Checkit in the Tote Cambridgeshire, found things going their way when Tusk made all to take the Kennett Handicap by a short head and a neck from Tizzy May and Brave Call.
“He is so tough and whenever anything comes to challenge him he finds more,” said Tim Corby, representing the winning trainer.
“Sam has won on him twice earlier this season and he rode a corking race on him there. He is in a 0-90 race at York on Friday and he could go there if he comes out of this well enough.”
“He is in the horses in training sale and he certainly has the size and scope to make a jumper. There have been a number of inquiries about him.”
Tusk is part-bred and owned by Frank Adams, who has been with Channon since the former England footballer started training.
“We sold this horse’s dam when she was in foal to Classic Cliche and her foal later won a best in show, so maybe we did not do the right thing to sell her.
“But we have a yearling colt by Piccolo out of Song of Skye to go to Mick later this year, so we shall keep on firing away,” said Adams.
Race Five: Kennett Rated Handicap
Placed Quotes:
“IF ONLY IT WOULD RAIN,” GROANS HANNON
There can be few unluckier horses around than Tizzy May, who finished second for the fourth time this season when short-headed by Tusk in the Kennett Rated Handicap.
Tizzy May won twice as a two-year-old, but since then Lady Luck has deserted him and Richard Hannon shook his head with disbelief when the photo-finish verdict was announced.
Hannon said:”I can’t believe it has happened again. Every time he seems to find one to beat him, but he needs some ground.”
Dane O’Neill, who rode Tizzy May, said:”They quickened away from us running down into the Dip, and, though I thought then we might finish a poor third, when the ground levelled out he picked up, and he was getting back at the end. He is so game and genuine, but he just needs to get his toe in again.”
Race Six: Tony Lake Memorial EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
Winning Quotes
FINALLY FOR VALJARV
Valjarv, placed in four of her seven races so far, besides finishing fourth in the Lowther at York, finally gained an overdue first success in the Tony Lake Memorial EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.
Nick Littmoden, who will now finish Valjarv for the season, said: ”She is quality and she was a bit unlucky to be only third in the big Sales race at Ascot last time, getting held up in the chasing pack.
“So we rode her handier this time, and everything worked out well. I know there were strong whispers for Roger Charlton’s odds-on favourite Kind, but it would have needed a Group filly to beat us here.
“The one disappointment came in the Sales race at The Curragh, where she was in season, but she’ll be back next year and competing in Listed and Group races.”
Roger Charlton offered no excuses for the disappointing run of Kind (4-7), who was in trouble a long way out and trailed in fourth.
Charlton said:”Kind ran well enough on her debut at Kempton, but to make her odds-on here was just ridiculous. The winner had far superior form, and my filly has never looked above average.
“People have already been talking of her as a Guineas filly, which is absurd. It’s all jockey talk, and as a non-betting trainer my feeling is that those that laid the odds-on deserve what they got.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE SIX
TONY LAKE MEMORIAL EBF MAIDEN FILLIES’ STAKES
66-1 SHOT NOT A SHOCK
“I had a bit of the 66-1, reinvesting the winnings from Reap earlier in the week,” said Jeff Pearce after Stargem, who is trained by his wife Lydia, had beaten all but Valjarv in the two-year-old maiden.
“Russell (Price) is the one who has been raving about her,” Pearce added and the jockey’s high hopes were well justified with this excellent effort.
“She is a first horse for her owners Marie and Al Miller and I have a little share in her as well,” said Pearce, who will take his time about deciding whether Stargem will race again this season.
“Now we’ve done that we can afford to take our time with her; we don’t rush her now,” he said. “She is a first foal and her dam won five times on the soft, so some easier ground will help her in the future.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
NGK SPARK PLUGS HANDICAP
TEN CARAT MAY BE BACK NEXT TIME
Top Carat made almost every yard of the running to take the closing NGK Spark Plugs Handicap, and he could return here in a fortnight’s time for the Tote Cesarewitch. He has a 5lb penalty to add to his 7st 8lb for that marathon.
“I don’t know yet if he will run in the Cesarewitch, it is a very tough race for a three-year-old,” said the colt’s trainer Amanda Perrett.
“He was very game and Richard (Hughes) gave him a lovely front-running ride. He does not have to make it, but he was coming back here to a mile and six after winning over two miles last time and he wanted a good, even gallop. I think he would be better with some cut in the ground.”
Charles Egerton was delighted with his 16-1 shot Valance, who finished third, and he is contemplating going three-year-old hurdling with him.
Egerton said:”Steve (Drowne) was impressed, but they went no pace which doesn’t suit him a he is just a galloper. He might make a nice two-mile handicapper next season, and, who knows, we might even think about the Cesarewitch if he can climb up the weights.”
LOOKING BACK AT THE FIRST TWO DAYS
Some serious contenders for next year’s classics emerged from the two big two-year-old races, Thursday’s Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes which was won by Carry On Katie, and the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes yesterday, from which Three Valleys emerged victorious.
Carry On Katie likes nothing better than to bowl along in front, and the key is for her to do at a settled pace, so that she does not run herself into the ground. Frankie Dettori executed this to perfection and the filly held off Majestic Desert by a short head, with Badminton, who had been second behind Carry On Katie in the Lowther Stakes at York, a length and three-quarters back in third.
Not everyone was persuaded that Carry On Katie will stay a mile next year, but Dettori has every confidence that she will get the trip and she is now a top-priced 12-1 for the classic.
Her trainer Jeremy Noseda, for whom she has won three times in three starts, is resigned to the possibility that she will join the Godolphin team as she was bought before the Lowther by Mohammed Rashid, a member of the Maktoum team.
The trainers of both Majestic Desert and Badminton left Newmarket with high hopes of their fillies. Kieren Fallon told Mick Channon that Majestic Desert will have no problem staying a mile, and Clive Brittain is already comparing Badminton with Crimplene, with whom he won four Group 1 races three years ago.
Three Valleys, who looked so good when he romped home in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and then flopped against current 2,000 Guineas favourite One Cool Cat in Ireland, handsomely retrieved his reputation in the Middle Park when beating the Gimcrack winner Balmont by three-quarters of a length.
Prince Khalid Abdullah’s colt, who can be forgiven his Irish flop because his lungs were found to be full of mucus after the race, is now second favourite (though his odds vary from 7-2 to 8-1) for the Guineas and Richard Hughes has no doubts that he will stay a mile.
Balmont is trained by Jeremy Noseda, who thus came very close to a major double, and was so pleased with the way in which his colt ran that he could bring him out again in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket’s next meeting, and connections of third-placed Holborn and Auditorium, who was fourth, were well pleased with their colts’ displays.
Other notable moments during the first two days included a first Group success for Jamie Osborne, when Milk It Mick and Pat Eddery came from last to first to take the Somerville Tattersall Stakes, and a biggest success for owner-breeder, QC Jeremy Gompertz, who has recently been acting as counsel for the Kelly family at the Hutton Inquiry, with the 25-1 win of Colonel Cotton in the Listed Rous Stakes.
Ekraar ended his racing career in the best possible style by taking the Listed Fishpools Furnishings Godolphin Stakes from Compton Bolter and is now off to stud, and there was another major turn-up when 25-1 Splendid Era made it all to upset odds on Kalaman in the Shadwell Stud Joel Stakes.
BETTING NEWS
Inevitably the big betting race of the day, the Tote Cambridgeshire (3.35) has collared the bulk of the business in the offices this morning and a gamble is developing strength on Jazz Messenger, whose trainer and jockey Gerard Butler and Eddie Ahern were successful with Beauchamp Pilot twelve months ago.
Sven Hanson’s three-year-old has been backed from 10-1 to 8-1 with Coral and Paddy Power, from the same price to 15-2 with William Hill, from 11-1 to 8-1 with Ladbrokes and from the same price to 7-1 with Stan James.
Far Lane has been in demand with Coral, where he is at 12-1 from 16-1, with Ladbrokes, where he has been trimmed from 20-1 to 16-1 and with the Tote, who have cut him from 22-1 to 14-1. The Tote have also had support for Akshar, who is now at 15-2 from 9-1, and Coral have brought in Zabaglione from 14-1 to 11-1.
Among the outsiders there has been demand for Pentecost, who is at 28-1 from 40-1 with Stan James and from the same odds to 22-1 with the Tote, while Coral have reduced Irish challenger Cache Creek from 50-1 to 33-1.
Away from the Cambridgeshire, Favourable Terms is all the rage in the Peugeot Sun Chariot Stakes (2.50), and she is now an odds on chance with Hills, who have cut her from 5-4 to 10-11. She is at evens from the same opening price with Coral, and at 6-5 from 11-8 with Stan James.
There is some opposition to her, though, as Soldera has been cut from 7-1 to 11-2 with the Tote, to the same price from 15-2 with Coral, from 8-1 to 5-1 with Hills, by a point to 6-1 by Ladbrokes, from 11-2 to 9-2 with Stan James and from 8-1 to 5-1 with Paddy Power.
In the Finnforest Oh So Sharp Stakes (2.15) Stan James have cut Spotlight from 3-1 to 11-4, and the same firm have slashed Brave Call in the Kennett Handicap (4.10) from 7-1 to 4-1.
TOTE RECORDS BROKEN
AT NEWMARKET
Greene King will be flowing freely in the Wheatsheaf pub in the Bedfordshire town of Biggleswade this weekend, with one of the regulars having won £63,284.30 on a record Tote Placepot payout at Newmarket on Friday.
One of 3,146 Greene King customers to attend Friday’s meeting at HQ, the anonymous punter, who was a member of a coach party from his local and confesses he is “a once-a-year-racegoer”, staked only £8.
Explaining the record dividend, Andy Clifton, PR director at the Tote, said:”It always looked like being a big pay-out, but Island Light was a late withdrawal in the last leg, which reduced the field to four and made it necessary to find the winner rather than either of the first two.”
The previous record Tote Jackpot had stood for 12 years, but one of their East Anglian credit customers formed a syndicate, and they, too, will be celebrating this weekend, having proved the sole winners and netted a cool £494,880.
Clifton added:“Splendid Era’s 25-1 success scuppered the majority of Jackpotters, but, though all four runners in the last were covered, plenty were relying on 6-4 favourite Self Evident to do the business and went home disappointed when King’s County came sailing by.”
And on a day of Tote records the Quadpot dividend of £4,111.70 was only won to 80p, so £1,111 rolls over to today’s Cambridgeshire meeting, and Clifton anticipates that the previous best of £2,546.70 from Plumpton last year might well be in danger.
HILLS HAS ONE HAND ON CHARITY TROPHY
Michael Hills, who rode a double on each of the first two days, is a warm favourite to clinch the Peugeot Charity Trophy awarded to the leading jockey at the Cambridgeshire meeting.
With four winners in the bag, Hills goes into the final day two clear of Jamie Spencer, the pair being the only riders to have so far managed more than a single.
Hills has five rides today, including the forecast favourite Asia Winds for his father Barry in the opener, though Spencer, who opposes him with Varnay and later partners the much-fancied Godolphin filly Echoes of Eternity in the Group Two Peugeot Sun Chariot Stakes, has not given up hope that he might yet catch his weighing-room colleague.
This is the second year that Peugeot has sponsored the jockeys’ challenge at this meeting and, in addition to a handsome trophy, the leading rider receives the use of a Peugeot vehicle for six months to donate to the charity of his choice.
Last year’s successful recipient was Richard Quinn, who nominated SENSE, a charity that works to improve the quality of life for the death and the blind, as his chosen beneficiaries.
Lisa Hancock, Newmarket’s Managing Director, said:”It’s a fantastic gesture from Peugeot as it offers the victorious jockey a chance to support a cause that they feel particularly strongly about.”
GOING CHANGE
The going is now
GOOD TO FIRM, FIRM IN PLACES.
“This is the result of the sun and wind throughout the morning,” said clerk of the course Michael Prosser.
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
The going for the third and final day of the Cambridgeshire meeting remains
GOOD TO FIRM.
“We had a dry night, though there was a good dew this morning, and the ground is the same as it has been for the past two days,” said clerk of the course Michael Prosser.
“I shall walk the course with the Senior Steward (Captain Adrian Pratt) before racing and see if the sun we have enjoyed this morning has made any difference.
“The forecast is for the cloud cover to increase from the North at about mid day, and the possibility of a little light rain, but because of the wind it is unlikely to amount to much.
“The day is generally likely to be fairly bright and breezy.”

1ALMOND MOUSSE (Ecurie Vallin) Robert Collet FR 4-8-13 Sylvain Maillot [6]
Untested on fast ground and and though she has got within two lengths of Bright Sky in a French Group Two could finish only a close fourth in a Listed race last time out.
BP= 20/1 Bet365
2MACADAMIA (Lord Vestey) James Fanshawe 4-8-13 Dane O'Neill [5]
Has run splendidly well this season until tried in the highest company last time out over 10 furlongs - was fifth to Russian Rhythm then in the Group One Vodafone Nassau Stakes and not disgraced, especially as she is better at a mile. A fair chance but others make more appeal.
BP= 5/1 Coral Eurobet & Bet365
3MONTURANI (Mrs R Philipps) Geoff Wragg 4-8-13 Darryll Holland [8]
By Indian Ridge so may not find this ground suitable and anyway does not look good enough.
BP= 22/1 Coral Eurobet & Bet365
4WELSH DIVA (Usk Valley Stud) Amanda Perrett 4-8-13 Eddie Ahern [9]
Has not run since June and disappointed then behind Macadamia but the trainer is in better form now.
BP= 33/1 except Coral Eurobet & Stanleybet
5ECHOES IN ETERNITY (Godolphin) Saeed Bin Suroor 3-8-10 Jamie Spencer [4]
Bounced back to form at Yarmouth in a Listed race. Likes this fast ground and Godolphin is in form. Has a good chance and this a fair price.
BP= 7/1 Ladbrokes
6FAVOURABLE TERMS (Maktoum Al Maktoum) Sir Michael Stoute 3-8-10 Pat Eddery [7]
Lightly-raced and showed improved form to win a French race Group Two last time but this is very short.
BP= 11/10 Tote
7HANAMI (G B Partnership) James Toller 3-8-10 Richard Hughes [10]
Disappointed in the Irish Oaks last time in July, but won a Group Two at the Curragh over 10 furlongs and was previously sixth in the Oaks and fifth in the Guineas. Has somethong to prove coming back.
BP= 11/1 Bet365
8HOLD TO RANSOM (Khalid Buhaleeba) Ed Dunlop 3-8-10 Pat Smullen [3]
Fifth in Canadian Group Two last time out and has run consistently all season except when hampered and disappointed in the Falmouth Stakes at the July Course, won by Macadamia. May be worth another chance at this price
BP= 14/1 Bet365
9LONDONNETDOTCOM (Derek & Jean Clee) Mick Channon 3-8-10 Steve Drowne [2]
It is questionable if she is up to this grade.
BP= 66/1 Ladbrokes
10SOLDERA (Wood Hall Stud Ltd) James Fanshawe 3-8-10 Oscar Urbina [1]Close fourth to Favourable Terms last time out and won at Ascot previously but nothing specially to recommend her.
BP= 6/1 Stanleybet & Bet365
SUMMARY
A fascinating race where Echoes In Eternity and Hold To Ransom are the clear value choices - the question is whiuch one to choose. With Saeed bin Surror is much form than Ed Dunlop, ECHOES IN ETERNITY gets the nod each-way.
