SUNLINE WINS THE COX PLATE AGAIN
Sunline, trained by Trevor McKee, proved that she is Australia's true
champion, when winning the seventh leg of the Emirates World Series - The BMW
Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, Melbourne on Saturday.
Ridden by Greg Childs the daughter of Desert Sun was always towards the front
of the field and began early in third place with the race being taken along
by the John Ralph-trained The Message, with Stephen Baster aboard. In second
during the early stages was Skoozi Please, partnered by Jim Cassidy.
Fubu, a 50-1 shot, raced in fourth with last year's fourth placegetter Testa
Rossa in fifth. Rounding the home turn Sunline pulled her way to the front
and soon went clear of the field, and ran on to the finish to record a seven
length victory and her second win in a row of the BMW Cox Plate, and she also
became the first horse to win the same race in the Emirates World Series for
a second time.
The Emirates World Series Racing Championship, sponsored by Emirates, the
international airline of the UAE and four times winner of Airline of the
Year, takes in the 11 most prestigious thoroughbred races around the globe
and is the largest sponsorship in the history of horseracing.
Diatribe, the recent Caulfield Cup winner, ran on well to finish second,
partnered by Craig Williams, with the Larry Cassidy ridden Referral a nose
back in third. Fourth place went to Brian Mayfield-Smith's Oliver Twist.
Tie The Knot, a 6-1 change, trained by Guy Walter, ran a disappointing race
to finish ninth as did the well backed Sky Heights who beat one home.
After the race Childs said, "I said to Trevor (McKee) that I would not let
here pull but she wanted to go at the 1,000 metre pole so I let her, she is
an amazing mare."
Sunline could now head for the tenth leg of the Emirates World Series - the
Japan Cup or the finale of the series in the Hong Kong Cup on December 17th.
A win in any of these races could take he to the head of the rankings and on
to being the 2000 Emirates World Series Champion.
