NEWBURY RACECOURSE TO STAGE VERY VALUABLE NOVICES' CHASE
The most valuable novices' chase outside the National Hunt Festival, the £50,000 Grade Two Elizabeth Hitchins Memorial Novices' Chase, is being staged at Newbury on Friday, November 24, the first day of the Hennessy Meeting.
The three-mile contest, which has previously been run at Worcester, is backed by racehorse owner Robert Hitchins in honour of his late wife Elizabeth.
The total prize fund of £50,000 makes the Elizabeth Hitchins Memorial Novices' Chase the most valuable novices' chase outside the National Hunt Festival, with prize money having been boosted by 127% (£28,000).
Last year's Worcester equivalent of the Elizabeth Hitchins Memorial Novices' Chase went to the Mark Pitman-trained Connor Macleod, who went on to finish third in the Mumm Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree's Grand National meeting in April.
The Worcester contest was won in 1995 by Betty's Boy, who later landed the William Hill National Hunt Chase at the 1999 National Hunt Festival, and in 1992 by Barton Bank, who went on to be a top chaser.
The Hitchins enjoyed numerous big-race victories as racehorse owners both on the Flat and over jumps. Ian Balding sent out Tagula to gain a Group One victory in the Prix Morny at Deauville in 1995, while some of their better-known National Hunt horses have included Toby Tobias, Golden Freeze, Team Challenge, and Princeful. The latter was successful in the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle at the 1998 National Hunt Festival staying on well to beat Splendid Thyne by two lengths.
Friday, November 24, is a charity day in aid of the Lambourn Valley Housing Trust, and last year £40,000 was raised. The charity, which has raised ś1 million over the last 10 years, was also supported earlier in the year by the Lambourn Open Day.
On Friday evening, the night before the Hennessy Gold Cup is run at Newbury, the second Hennessy Gold Cup Dinner is being held. This fantastic social event is being sponsored by Guinness Peate, who are major shareholders in Newbury Racecourse.
Mark Kershaw, Newbury's Managing Director, said: "The Elizabeth Hitchins Memorial Novices' Chase at Newbury on Friday, November 24, is out to attract the best three-mile novice chasers in the country. Newbury is delighted to be able stage this race.
"Robert Hitchins, and his late wife Elizabeth, have been tremendous supporters of British horse racing, and our thanks go to him"
