RECORDS FALL ON THIRD DAY OF THE OCTOBER YEARLING SALE
The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continued in stunning fashion on the third day today with a new record price for a yearling at this sale being recorded as well as staggering increases in the aggregate, average and median prices compared to last years third day. A total of 158 yearlings were bought for 11,871,500 guineas, an increase of 84% on last year. The average and median price increased 96% and 70% respectively to 75,136 guineas and 51,000 guineas. Further indication of the stunning results were that 39 yearlings made 100,000 guineas or more on Wednesday taking the total to 56 for the sale thus far compared to last years total of 19
throughout the five days selling.
A new record price for a yearling at the October Yearling Sale was set at the end of the night with the third last lot making 450,000 guineas. Lot 738, a bay colt by Darshaan out of the Shadeed mare Touville was knocked down to Anthony Stroud who was buying for Ivan Allen. He held off a spirited effort from Larry Stratton buying on behalf of Miss Ying Shen who races horses in France.
Earlier Lot 620, a bay colt by Cadeaux Genereux out of the Beldale Flutter mare Flitteriss Park, had created a new record price at the October Yearling sale during the first session on the third day. Keen interest from Shadwell and Charlie Gordon-Watson saw the surpass the previous record of 430,000 guineas with Gordon-Watson securing the colt for 440,000 guineas.
Earlier, a chestnut colt by Singspiel out of the Shaadi mare Velvet Moon was sold to John Ferguson, acting on behalf of Godolphin, early on Thursday morning at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 350,000 guineas.
Charlie Gordon-Watson was the underbidder of the colt whose dam Velvet Moon won the Group 2 Lowther Stakes and is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Central Park.
12 CHALLENGE FOR EMIRATES WORLD SERIES SIXTH LEG
Daliapour, by Sir Michael Stoute, heads the market following the post position draw on Thursday for the sixth leg of the Emirates World Series - The Canadian International (Gr.1) at Woodbine Racecourse, Toronto, on Sunday.
Currently on seven Emirates World Series points, Daliapour is the 2-1 favourite for the mile and a half turf contest. The son of Sadler's Wells, will be ridden on Sunday by the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winning jockey Johnny Murtagh, and a win in the Canadian International would take him to the lead in the Emirates World Series and well on the way to becoming the millennium world champion.
The Emirates World Series Racing Championship, sponsored by Emirates, the international airline of the UAE and four times winner of Airline of the Year, takes in the 11 most prestigious thoroughbred races around the globe and is the largest sponsorship in the history of horseracing.
Free Vacation, trained by Roger Attfield, was one of the surprise runners declared for Sunday's race. The three-year-old daughter of Fly So Free is the only filly in the race and was last seen out finishing second in the Grade Two Sky Classics Handicap at Woodbine in September. Free Vacation, who will be ridden by David Clark, had her last win over Sunday's course and distance in early September in the Flaming Page.
River Boat, from the stables of Frank Huarte, was the other surprise runner declared on Thursday. A seven-year-old son of Regal Classic finished sixth in his latest outing, the Sky Classic Handicap. His previous run saw him land a nose victory in the Grade Two Niagara Breeders' Cup Handicap - over course and distance.
Second favourite in the CAN$1,500,000 contest is Mutafaweq, trained by World Champion Saeed bin Suroor. Currently priced at 3-1, the son of Silver Hawk will have the services of World Champion jockey Frankie Dettori on Sunday.
Mutafaweq disappointed in the fourth leg of the Emirates World Series - the Grosser Preis von Baden when the ground was bottomless. He improved in his most recent run when finishing third in the Irish St Leger at The Curragh.
The Andreas Schutz-trained Caitano is currently priced at 9-2 and has been drawn in stall seven. The son of Niniski, who has won over US$ 1.6 million in his career, will be ridden on Sunday by Germany's leading jockey Andrasch Starke. Starke currently has 12 Emirates World Series points and a win in this race would take him to the top of the rankings were he would be joint leader with Michael Kinane.
Dawson's Legacy, trained in Canada by Mike Doyle, is having his second attempt at the Canadian International. The son of Roanoke has yet to win this season but finished a close second on his last outing in an allowance race at Woodbine.
Mark Johnston is hoping to win this race after finishing runner-up 12 months ago, he will be represented on Sunday by his Geoffrey Freer Stakes winner Murghem, currently priced at 10-1. The five-year-old, who will be ridden by Darryll Holland in the big race, is stepping up in class on Sunday but if running to his best could go close.
Johnston said, "He's going to have to run right up to his best or better. He's had an excellent season and he's shown huge amounts of improvement but he's going to have to show more."
Lycitus, drawn 12, is having his first run for his new trainer Darrell Vienna. The son of Lycius was previously trained in France by Francois Doumen and won the Group Three Prix de Lys at Chantilly in June. Gary Stevens, who came out of retirement in October, will partner Lycitus on Sunday. Stevens already knows what it is like to win the International after taking the honours with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Singspiel in 1996 and with Royal Anthem in 1998.
Canada's Olympic Gold Triathlon Medallist in the Sydney 2000 Games, Simon Whitfield was on hand to help with the draw for Sunday's race. The 25-year-old flew in from Honolulu where he is preparing for the Iron Man competition. During the draw Whitfield said, "I am so excited to be here, we all share the same passion about our sports. You all love horse racing and I love to race."
The Canadian International will be shown live on the Emirates World Series website at www.racingseries.com, and the Ontario Jockey Club site at www.woodbinemohawk.com.
