The 16th edition of Travelling The Turf has named Uttoxeter as National Racecourse of the Year.

The course was praised for its commitment to provide first-class facilities and high levels of customer service, which rivalled many larger courses.

We aim to do this by providing every customer passing through our famous green gates with premier service and first-class facilities."

ARENA JOIN FORCES WITH BskyB AND CHANNEL 4

Arena Leisure has signed an exclusive agreement with BSkyB and Channel 4 to bid for the media rights to the 59 racecourses in Britain. The joint-venture will be known as "NewCo."

Channel 4, along with Premium TV and the BBC, had previously withdrawn a £225 million bid while Arena's previous £320 million bid lapsed two days ago. NewCo's offer is expected to be made in the next couple of weeks.

Currently, there is a £400 million offer over a 10-year period on the table from Carlton, who have set a deadline of October 24 for begining a period of exclusivity.

Ian Penrose, of Arena Leisure, stated: "Our partnership with Channel 4 and BskyB combines all the necessary broadcasting, technology, interactive gaming and racing experience, expertise and contacts to develop UK racing as a truly global media and gaming product.

"We sincerely hope the UK Racecourses will appreciate that this partnership is best placed to maximise enhanced revenue streams to racing."

STUNNING SECOND DAY AT OCTOBER YEARLING SALE

Results on the 2nd day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale exceeded all expectations with the average price up 51% on the same session last year to 37,454 guineas. The aggregate of 8,464,700 was an increase of 32% on last years session. The strength of the days selling is underlined by the increase of 42% in the median price to 27,000 guineas. A total of 16 yearlings sold for more than 100,000 guineas during Wednesday's sessions compared to last years sale where 19 yearlings made 100,000 guineas throughout the whole five days selling.

John Ferguson, buying for Godolphin was very active at the top end of the market buying four of the five lots to make more than 200,000 guineas.

Three of these each made 220,000 guineas, the equal top price for the sale thus far, the other making 200,000 guineas. Charlie Gordon-Watson also paid 210,000 guineas for his purchase earlier in the day.

Ferguson's purchases included lot 468, a bay colt by King's Theatre out of the Persian Bold mare Persian Walk. The colt fell to Ferguson for 200,000 guineas after a spirited bidding dual with Amanda Skiffington.

This purchase followed shortly after his purchase of lot 455, an Entrepreneur filly from the Shareef Dancer mare National Ballet whom he purchased for 220,000 guineas.

Earlier Ferguson saw off interest from John Gosden and Johnny McKeever to buy lot 352, a chestnut colt by Cadeaux Genereux out of the Alzao mare Elfin Laughter, for 220,000 guineas. Lot 383, a bay colt by Zafonic out of the Mill Reef mare Gull Nook, a half-brother to Pentire, also came under much attention. Ferguson eventually made the winning bid of 220,000 guineas after a dual with Manfred Hofer.

Earlier in the day Charlie Gordon-Watson paid 210,000 guineas for lot 284, a chestnut filly by Selkirk out of the High Line mare Always Friendly.

Gordon-Watson fought off keen interest from John Gosden and Hugo Lascelles to secure the filly who will be trained by Roger Charlton.

BRIGHTON AND REDCAR FRIDAY CARDS ABANDONED

Two more meetings have fallen victim to the ongoing wet weather, with Brighton and Redcar abandoning their Friday cards.

John Gundill, Redcar's Clerk of the Course, stated: "Racing has been abandoned for tomorrow as well.

"There is no hope that the course will be raceable tomorrow.

"We didn't have any more rain overnight but there is still standing water and we have got patches of false ground from where we raced two weeks ago."

Meanwhile. Jeremy Martin, Clerk of the Course at Brighton stated: "I've been out with local trainers Gary Moore and Mark Flower and there are too many dodgy areas. It is unbelievable - I have never seen Brighton like it."

"We have had two inches of rain overnight and five in the past week.

"But hopefully we will be all right for our meeting next Thursday."

An inspection is planned for Catterick's Saturday card.
