MURTAGH'S THREE WINNERS AT LONGCHAMP

Johnny Murtagh had three Group One victories at Longchamp today, winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barriere on Sinndar, the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp-Majestic Barriere on Namid and the Prix de l'Opera-Hotel du lac Barriere on Petrushka.

Murtagh waved the Irish tricolour after he steered Sinndar to victory over two French-trained three-year-old fillies Egyptband by a length and a half and Volvoret who was another three lengths back in third . It was Ireland's first Arc success since Alleged in 1978.

He was the first horse to complete the treble of the Vodafone Derby, Budweiser Irish Derby and Arc.

Sinndar's owner the Aga Khan said: "This is an exceptional horse. I have to consider him now among the very best I have seen."

Pacemaker Raypour failed to do his job until after a furlong, with Sinndar left in the lead for those early stages. But after that it all went to plan. Settled in second, Murtagh sent Sinndar for home over two furlongs out and they rallied well to hold off the challenge of the second.

Montjeu, the odds-on favourite, was fourth after never looking being able to produce his usually devastating turn of foot.

Murtagh said: "He's everything I thought he was and I was never worried at any stage of the race. He is an exceptional horse - the best I have ridden. He fought all the way."

Oxx said: "Every time this horse runs you get a better feel. He is a great horse who has improved all year."

Namid comfortably beat two-year-old Superstar Leo by one and a half lengths, with Pipalong in third in the Prix de l'Abbaye, another Oxx and Murtagh triumph.

Petrushka, owned by the Library Syndicate of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, was the other Murtagh Group One winner, beating the Frankie Dettori-ridden Reve D'Oscar in the Prix de l'Opera.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: "Johnny did extremely well to get Petrushka where he did from that draw and this is a great performance from horse and jockey. Petrushka is staying in training next year and that is certainly something to look forward to."

She runs next in the Fillies and Mares' Turf race at the Breeders' Cup meeting at Churchill Downs on November 4.
